Week 10 Recap


How is it already December?!?!

This week felt like it was two weeks put into one, probably because it was 3 days of work and then 4 days of fun.

My preceptor was gone Monday-Wednesday and I was super busy all three days trying to get all her work done for her.  It was a lot! I was mostly doing assessments and things I had done all last week too, but this time I had no one to bounce ideas off of or go to for advice.  I seriously got a taste of what it would be like to be a new hire in a facility and have to ask a million questions to get a sense of who you are working with and what there normal is, etc.  I had to put my big girl pants on a few times and go talk to nurses and CNAs about things in the charts I was unclear about.

I think I grew a lot in those 3 days having to take care of things and not being able to just go to my preceptor for answers.  The hardest part were the focus sessions I had to attend on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The focus sessions are a quarterly review for residents who are there long term. It’s a chance for the nurses, dietitian, chaplain, and activites coordinator to get together and discuss how the resident has been doing and any needs that need to be met in the future.  I actually felt completely unqualified to be making diagnoses for those few residents, especially since a few of them were a lot more complex than just saying “nutritionally stable.”  I am definitely going to have my preceptor triple check everything I did because I’m sure she could come up with something better than I did.

I’m kind of freaking out about my rotation this week, I feel like I have way too much to do in terms of projects and I know there are also a million assessments that need to be done. AHHHHHH! I can’t think about it right now.

Anyways, I kind of summed up my Thanksgiving in my TOTW post from yesterday, so I won’t go into much detail.  I worked as assistant dietary manager for 5 hours on Thanksgiving and then headed to Meghan’s house to celebrate with her family.  I was so grateful for their invitation again this year, I had a lot of fun!  I also worked assistant dietary manager all day on Friday.  It’s really amazing how much more comfortable I was going into resident’s rooms and talking to them. Like my boss told me, it’s good practice for my internship 🙂

On Thanksgiving, this goober celebrated her 1st birthday…

So she promptly destroyed her new toy, Bad Kitty.



And then acted like she didn’t do it with stuffing stuck to her face!  I miss this furball.

Last night I went out in downtown Portland for my friend Samantha’s birthday.  We went to my favorite bar, Jones, that plays all 80s and 90s music.  I haven’t been there since August and I had so much fun! Getting caught in a downpour while sprinting to the car at 1 am was not so fun though. Gotta love Oregon!



I’ve got a recipe to share so I’ll be back later this week with that.

We might get snow this week! I’m so excited!
